Seven years ago today, on the 20th February 2013, Sony officially announced the PlayStation 4. It did so at the PlayStation Meeting -- an event that it had been hyping up for around a week beforehand. At the time we all knew what was coming -- Sony itself had confirmed that next-gen hardware would be detailed -- but we didn't actually get to lay our eyes on the console until E3 later that year.
Still, the PlayStation Meeting made for an exciting show. We learned all about the PS4's inner workings and got to see a bunch of brand new games. Here on Push Square, our illustrious editor Sammy Barker had to cover the entire thing by himself, with the help of only a few volunteers. A lot has changed in the last seven years.
But here we are in 2020 waiting for Sony to (supposedly) announce a similar event to 2013's PlayStation Meeting. With the PS5 launching later this year, surely the company's silence must be broken soon. Some rumours had marked today for the all-important reveal, but looking at the clock, that probably isn't going to happen.

I really do wonder if Sony is holding off announcing the system until the last possible minute because some of the heavy-hitters launching in the next few months are also going to be PS5 launch titles.
Which also makes me suspect that Sony is going to pull some corporate douche-baggery (can I say that?) and make you double-dip for games you already own for their PS5 version - leading to smaller sales of these gems at release time as people wait for the PS5 to release for the "best" version of said games.
I really hope I am proven wrong.
Games that were announced or shown that day:
Killzone: Shadowfall
Knack
Driveclub
Deep Down
Infamous Second Son
Destiny
Diablo 3
Watch Dogs
And The Witness.
Tech demos from Media Molecule, Epic, Square-Enix, Havok and Quantic Dream were featured too.
I still hope there's ps meeting at the end of this month, maybe state of play with ps5 info.
Yeah.....I wish you wouldn’t have brought this up. It just makes the current wait suck more.
That day was amazing.i watch the whole show with rice and beans.and chicken wings.with Tropicana orange juice.it was cool.haha.word up son
I remember Microsoft’s reaction before they totally screwed the pooch at E3. 😂😂😂😂😂

This generation has flown by, it doesn’t feel like it was 7 years ago at all. The PS4 still has plenty of life left in it, especially the Pro but I’m looking forward to seeing what the PS5 and Series X brings.
The PS4 was announced 7 years ago today...but it still didn’t launch until November 15. That’s why people saying “Sony hasn’t announced anything new so I’m not buying a PlayStation” are the worst. Sony has already slated “holiday 2020” for the PS5 launch. Whether they make an announcement today or in 6 months, that doesn’t change anything (unless the Coronavirus has disrupted supply chains so severely that the target date can’t be met).
@HoodedSpirit
I really should guffaw more.
@Shirayuki True, but I am more talking about Final Fantasy VII Remake, The Last of Part II, and Ghost of Tsushima.
Oh the good ole days when Sony actually communicated and tried to get you hyped with press conferences. I miss the years of PS3 when Sony was the underdog and they really had drive to answer the fans. That's what made the PS4 generation maybe the best in there history, they took the ball and ran with it. Now we have this company that skips E3, does lackluster State of Plays, and drops random info from a Wired article. There now back in the position of the PS2 days where they are leading the console market and now dont think there sh*t stinks, and in turn only communicate with us when they feel like it. Lastly I'll say this, I go into every new generation of consoles looking at both sides fairly and if Sony continues this silence and doesnt deliver when they do speak I'll buy the console that is more engaged with the fans, and rn that's Microsoft.
@HoodedSpirit
Nice. Also the press reaction was so out of touch when it wasnt plain stupid. Good to see with hindsight.
@Ken_Kaniff
'the console that is more engaged with the fans"
Theres a very serious rumoured leak that says Sony is spending a lot of dollars for their cooling system. 🧐 the battle isn't lost yet!
@JJ2. What battle.x crap lost the battle long tine ago.😒word up son
@JJ2 Oh I'll wait till theres an official announcement from Sony before I decide what console to buy, but Sony is clearly changing their strategy and approach and so far I'm not a fan. I miss the old Sony.
Time flys... When your having Fun on your PS4

@Ken_Kaniff
I was only kidding guys haha
@Shirayuki CyberPunk and Control haven't been confirmed at all. Control had a decent rumor and CDProkt Red keeps saying it currently has no next-gen plans.
@Shirayuki Oh I am sure there will be a PS5 complete version of Final Fantasy VII - but I do wonder if Episode 1 will be a PS5 launch title. Not quite sure what a PS5 version would do differently as the game already looks fantastic - I guess native 4K at a locked 30fps?
I do hope that PS4 backwards compatibility games have some benefits on PS5 - e.g. faster (or no) load times, more stable framerates for games that don't quite make the target on PS4/Pro, improved (or locked max) resolution for games that run on a dynamic resolution scale, etc. I also hope that games that don't have a PS5 version will at least run using PS4 Pro options as opposed to base PS4 options for compatible games.
Basically, I hope the backwards compatibility is designed in a way that takes advantage of the boost in hardware power where appropriate in some way. I mean, simply having the ability to not have to keep my PS4 Pro is a nice option for when I upgrade - so I shouldn't complain. But it's just nice to take that extra mile and offer some perks for upgrading as well.
I am sure there are people hoping that PS4 games will suddenly be 4K and 60fps (just like there was that expectation when the PS4 Pro came out), but that kind of stuff would be reserved for PS5 versions of the game - UNLESS the game runs at both a dynamic resolution up to 4K AND had a 60fps target that isn't quite locked (e.g. DOOM - though that maxes at 1440p on PS4 Pro).
There is precedent to do special things with backwards compatible games on Sony systems. The PS2 added some texture smoothing to PS1 titles and the PS3 added texture smoothing and HD resolution upscaling for both PS2 and PS1 games. Perhaps Sony will do something similar with PS4 games running on PS5 hardware - maybe in the form of forcing 16x anisotropic filtering on all games (like the Xbox One X), or even a UHD resolution upscaling option.
@Shirayuki No, you said you were pretty sure 95% are coming which is fine, and then you listed specific games which were 100% chance of coming because they were confirmed. You changed from 95% to games which were specifically confirmed, with you making that specific difference.
